SÍNDROME DE DESPOBLAMIENTO DE COLMENA - HIVE COLLAPSE SYNDROME (Span and Eng).

HIVE COLLAPSE SYNDROME.

Albert Einstein already warned the importance for the whole terrestrial ecosystem including humans, have bees. Many biologists even admitting what is exaggerated in the affirmation of the genius of physics, however argue that without them and certainly, life on Earth would change dramatically.

The importance of bees in pollination and plant renewal is unmatched by any other animal species. More than 80% of the pollination by animals, by bees. There are butterflies, beetles and other insects that complete the process but if the bees disappear, the plant world was completely transformed, and just that is what seems to be happening:

Millions of bees disappear from their hives without a trace, even their bodies disappear. This alarming fact, called Beehive Syndrome Depopulation (CCD) and head carrying dozens of experts of beekeeping of half the world, has not yet a clear explanation. One of the most intriguing aspects of this phenomenon is not found the dead bodies of bees, or adults or hatchlings, nor the reasons for the death are known. At first, there was speculation that the cause was viral diseases, and in fact called swarming virus, because it seemed that the whole hive had swarmed and vanished. There were remnants of bees or beehives or in the vicinity. The hive was dead with abundant honey and pollen, but the bees were gone.

It is not yet known whether it is a disease, or a set of linked events, so it is more correct to call this syndrome massive disappearance of bees around the world. In the absence of certainty, several potential scenarios.

Some scientists believe that this is an intestinal parasite, Nosema ceranae, which causes a disease known as varroa or varroa. This parasite does not affect the Asian honeybee, but European and American bees, which are smaller and whose body is not immunized against the disease. One of the first symptoms is that the parasitized bees have deformed wings, leaving them unable to fly, and its size is reduced to a third of normal. The lack of vitality makes die slowly, until the hive disappears completely. From Asia, the varroa was spread by European countries, until in 1985 was detected in the Iberian Peninsula.

In 2010 it was reported that a possible cause of the syndrome pointed to the combined action of a virus and a fungus, but has not yet reached a conclusion on these findings. SDC is probably the result of a complex interaction, but the role of these pathogens is unclear. Meanwhile, the Varroa mite remains the most devastating plague worldwide for European bee.

Lately other explanation seems to have gained strength among the most world experts in the field: the boreal Apocephalus. It is a parasitic fly, previously known to infect bumblebees, and that could be the cause of the leak and subsequent death of honey bees half the world. This bug could be to blame for causing the disorder and collapse in the colonies. The small fly, smaller than the honey bee injects its eggs in the abdomen of the bee. At that time the bees mad and start behaving abnormally, says a study from the University of San Francisco published in an American journal.

Honey bees when they are infected, they start circling, without control or stability. Their behavior is modified, they leave the infected hive and die hundreds of kilometers of it, which would explain the absence of dead bodies inside the hives. Researchers say that up to 13 larvae of this "Decapitator fly" (because they are born from the head) emerge from each dead bee honey. Larvae crawl out bee about seven days after the eggs were injected.

This parasite could be the cause of the syndrome depopulation of beehives says Andrew Core, study leader, who does not rule out other possibilities such as the abuse of pesticides or even a strange virus that spreads in affected colonies and which has reduced US up to 90% hives.

Other hypotheses have been considered on the possible causes of this mysterious death are those who argue that the continuing disappearance of millions of bees in recent years is due to the use of pesticides and pesticides in the field, especially neurotoxic, which They use a lot of seeds. Other scientists say the fault is climate change, and still others blame the bad waves of mobile phones.

It is difficult to establish the cause or causes of this phenomenon, it is possible that the case of several causes acting simultaneously; but it is impossible to ignore is the ecological catátrofe that would occur if no remedy is found. Remember that the role of honeybees in pollination is vital to maintaining the diversity of ecosystems. In addition, bees produce honey, beeswax, royal jelly, pollen, propolis and bee venom, the poison of the sting, which is used to fight arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatisms, neck problems, back pain, pain, etc. Bees a vital pillar architecture teacher in the world, faces a crisis that could lead not only their own demise, if not millions of species that have joined their fate to that of plants pollinated by them; and we are the only species able to find the remedy.
