U.S. researchers have discovered that Beijing and viral pathogens that infect plants were transferred to bees which might explain its decline.
The research, published in the scientific journal of the American Society for Microbiology , accidentally found in bees , the presence of a virus commonly found in plants. This is the first evidence of infection of bees that have been exposed to infected pollen RNA virus which affects them to spread throughout the body, except the eyes .
It is known that bees ( Apis mellifera) can act as vectors in the transmission of Tobacco ringspot virus ( TRSV ) . About 5% of plant viruses are transmitted through pollen.
RNA viruses tend to be dangerous because they have the function to correct errors in the replicated genomes. The result is that viruses like TRSV generate a wide variant copies with different infective properties that can affect the immune response . These sources of genetic diversity , together with the large size of populations , facilitates virus adaptation to new conditions of selectivity, as imposed by their new hosts .
Several known to cause viral diseases in bees virus have been linked to the syndrome collapse disorder (CCD , for its acronym in English ) : the Israeli acute paralysis virus ( IAPV ), the acute paralysis virus ( ABPV ), the chronic paralysis virus ( CPV ) , Kashmir virus (KBV ), the virus of deformed wing virus ( DWV ) , virus cell of the Black Queen ( BQCV ) and virus breeding Saciforme ( SBV ) .
When evaluating strong or weak colony bees TRSV and other viruses were found more commonly in that in the strong weak colonies . Bee populations with high levels of viral infections declined in autumn and winter killed . By contrast, those colonies with viral load survived the winter months .
The TRSV was also detected in the varroa mite . However, unlike bees , their presence is limited to the digestive system , indicating that mites likely facilitate horizontal spread of TRSV inside the hive . The fact that infected eggs infected queens placed convinced scientists that could be transmitted vertically TRSV queen mother to offspring.
The researchers concluded that the increased prevalence TRSV along with other bee viruses , is associated with a decrease of host populations and supports the theory that viral infections negatively impact the colony.

Cosecha de miel en el Himalaya de Nepal - Honey harvest in the Himalayas of Nepal.
Cosecha de miel en el Himalaya de Nepal - Honey harvest in the Himalayas of Nepal.

In December 2013, photographer Andrew Newey spent two weeks living with the Gurung in a remote hilltop village in central Nepal’s Kaski district, joining the three-day autumn honey hunt, which was six weeks later than normal due to a changing climate and reduced bee population. Before a hunt can commence the honey hunters are required to perform a ceremony to placate the cliff gods. This involves sacrificing a sheep, offering flowers, fruits and rice, and praying to the cliff gods to ensure a safe hunt.
The Gurung tribesmen of Nepal are master honey hunters, risking their lives collecting honeycomb in the foothills of the Himalayas, using nothing more than handmade rope ladders and long sticks known as tangos. Most of the honey bees' nests are located on steep inaccessible, south-west facing cliffs to avoid predators and for increased exposure to direct sunlight.
Engulfed by the thick, acrid smoke, the hunter jousts tentatively at a nest with a bamboo stick with a sickle or wooden plate at one end, cutting the exposed honeycomb away from the cliff face. Using another stick to guide the basket hanging beside him, he catches the honeycomb as it falls before the basket is then lowered to the ground.
As the honey hunter descends the rope ladder, the blood, blisters and bee stings that are synonymous with this treacherous tradition become visible.
A honey hunter clings precariously to a rope ladder while he waits for the rising smoke to drive thousands of angry Apis Laboriosa, the largest honey bee in the world, out of their nests. Despite this being a team effort – up to a dozen men are drafted in to support the hunter or ‘kuiche’ - there is silence, pressure and precision
One major threat to traditional, responsible honey hunting comes from the growing medicinal reputation of Himalayan honey, which is increasingly exported for use in Japanese, Chinese and Korean traditional medicines and to treat infections and injuries. Spring ‘Red’ honey is the most sought after, costing upwards of $US15 per kilogram. This demand has resulted in a shift in ownership of the cliffs away from the indigenous communities to the government, allowing them to open honey-harvesting rights to contractors. At the same time the younger generation's reluctance to follow in the footsteps of their elders, due to the risks involved, limited income and moving away to cities, is also contributing to the dwindling numbers of traditional honey hunters
